Feeding Others of Dartmouth
"You can help others!"
What we are all about
Feeding others of Dartmouth is a non-profit, unifying effort. Our goal
is to provide nutritious meals to the under privileged in Dartmouth.
How we started:
Feed Others of Dartmouth, is a community group that feeds the homeless, started in
1994 and sprang from the compassionate and productive mind of Neil Black, inspired
by long-time patrons John and Margaret Savage and carried on each year by an army of
dedicated volunteers that has for a decade made this possible.
Our purpose is to provide a nutritous hot meal daily for adults aged 16 upwards; many
whom are either physically and/or mentally challenged; most are unemployed. We
receive donations from the downtown churches either in the form of a monetary
donation or food prepared for a particular day. Some churches provide 1 meal per
month while others send volunteers. On average we feed 80-100 people daily-upwards
to 125. We have staff & volunteers preparing, serving & cleaning. We offer a supper
program 3 evenings a week in addition to our serving a noon meal 365 days a year to
those unable to participate in our lunch program. Special meals are served during the
holidays. We rely upon the generosity of the public so we have an annual Christmas full
of caring dinner & auction to raise funds to maintain our current clientelle as well as
setting aside monies for the repairs & renovations of the property. We are currently
leasing the property from the Halifax Regional Municipality for $1 but we are totally
responsible for all expenditures pertaining to the property of 43 Wentworth Street. As
this site is a registered heritage property, all proposals have to be submitted for
approval before any interior or exterior work can begin.
How we operate:
We are located the corner of Wentworth and Octorloney Street in Dartmouth, Our
Kitchen expanded from two to three nights per week. The evening meal is served
from 4:30 PM to 5:00PM, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Lunch is served
from 12:00 to 12:30 seven days a week.
Where we are located:
Feeding Others of Dartmouth's kitchen can use volunteer help of all kinds and ages
in the preparation, serving and clean-up of the meals as well as occasional help with
general office work, during fundraisers and on deliveries or pick ups.
The greatest need during the evening meals is from 4:00 to 6:00 pm for the serving
of the evening meal and clean-up afterwards. We ask that regular volunteers come
one night each month on a regular basis, say the first Tuesday, second Wednesday,
etc. That way they will usually work with the same leader and some of the same
people.
The lunch program needs volunteers between 10 AM and 1:00 PM for preparation,
serving and clean-up.
On occasion Feeding Others of Dartmouth needs the uses of volunteers for
picking up, sorting and delivering food.
